The Slop Taxonomy

Five working categories for low-value content, each with its own detection signals and tells. Type your way to a faster verdict.

Generic Slop

Content that could be about anything. Swap the topic and the text survives untouched — because it was never about the topic.

Detection signals

  • "In today's fast-paced world" openers
  • No dates, names, or numbers
  • Conclusions that restate the intro
  • Topic-survival: change the subject, nothing breaks

Common phrases

in today's fast-paced worldin the world of…there are many aspects to considerit varies from person to person

Pseudo-Insight Slop

The shape of profundity without the substance. Contrast constructions and aphorisms stacked until you forget a claim was never made.

Detection signals

  • "Not just X — but Y" tics
  • Aphorism density above 1 per 300 words
  • Takeaways that restate the premise
  • Nothing you could argue with

Common phrases

it's not just about X, it's about Yat the end of the daythe real key isit's a journey, not a destination

Fake Authority Slop

Borrows credibility it does not have: studies that don't exist, statistics nobody measured, experts with no names.

Detection signals

  • "Studies show" with no citation
  • Precise-sounding numbers with no source
  • Institutional vibes, no institutions
  • Confidence inversely proportional to evidence

Common phrases

studies show that…experts agree…research has proven…according to leading analysts

Wikipedia Rehash

The first three search results, compressed into a listicle with the personality ironed out. Accurate-ish, useful never.

Detection signals

  • Summary-shaped sections
  • Zero first-person presence
  • Facts you already knew, phrased freshly
  • No opinion that could lose an argument

Common phrases

has a rich history dating back to…is widely considered…plays an important role in…in summary…

Wellness Slop

"Unlock your best self." Pathologizes normal life, sells rituals instead of results, and hedges everything in "may support".

Detection signals

  • Your journey, their product
  • Vague mechanism claims
  • Everything is a cornerstone or a game-changer
  • Supplement-adjacent urgency

Common phrases

unlock your best selfsupports overall wellnessnourish your body and mindthe gut-brain connection

How types overlap

Most real slop is a blend. The common combinations:

Generic + Pseudo-Insight

The default LinkedIn post: template topic plus template profundity.

Fake Authority + Wikipedia Rehash

The SEO article: borrowed facts, invented confidence.

Wellness + Pseudo-Insight

The morning-routine essay: rituals as revelation.

The antidote: what makes writing NOT slop

  • Specificity. A number, a date, a name — something that could only be in this piece.
  • Lived experience. What you actually did, what actually broke, what it actually cost.
  • Cited sources. Links to things a reader can check.
  • Information gain. The reader leaves knowing something they didn't know.
